How Much Feed Per Chicken?
| Type of bird | Feed per day | In ounces |
|---|---|---|
| Chicks (0–8 weeks) | 0.09 lb | about 1.5 oz |
| Growers (8–18 weeks) | 0.17 lb | about 2.7 oz |
| Laying hens | 0.25 lb | about 4 oz |
| Mixed flock | 0.22 lb | about 3.5 oz |
The classic rule is a quarter pound of feed per laying hen per day. Real flocks vary a little — hens eat more in cold weather and a bit less when they free range on good pasture — so treat this as a close planning number, and always keep feed available free choice.
